The shocking incident unfolded around ten thirty Friday morning at Preston Health Center, a fifty-eight-bed skilled-care facility located on Birdsong Way in the Hilton Head Plantation community. Deputies received reports of gunfire inside the nursing home and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, law enforcement made a grim discovery. "Deputies arrived and responded to a patient's room, where they located Harriett Kay Recker, eighty-two, of Sun City, alongside her spouse, an eighty-one-year-old man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries," officials stated.
According to police reports, Recker shot her husband in the torso inside the patient room. The victim was found alongside the suspect when deputies entered the room. Medical personnel and deputies immediately attempted lifesaving measures, but the eighty-one-year-old man died from his injuries at the scene.
Recker was taken into custody without incident and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. No bond has been set for the Sun City resident.
The facility was placed under heightened security as investigators processed the crime scene. "The public can expect an increased law enforcement presence in the area. Please avoid the area if possible during the investigation," authorities announced.
Officials were quick to reassure the community that this appeared to be an isolated domestic incident. "At no time was there a threat to the broader community. The investigation remains ongoing," they emphasized.
