On December thirtieth, twenty twenty-two, what started as a domestic dispute in Miami escalated into a horrifying attack that would leave one woman fighting for her life. According to police reports, Hugo Hernandez Murcia retrieved a fourteen-inch knife before following his wife outside their residence.
The situation quickly turned violent as Hernandez Murcia allegedly made slashing motions toward his wife's face, causing several lacerations across her features. But the attack didn't stop there. In what investigators describe as one of the most disturbing aspects of this case, he allegedly forced the knife into his wife's mouth, cutting her tongue completely in half.
The assault then took another sinister turn when Hernandez Murcia reportedly demanded money from his injured wife. Despite her severe injuries and trauma, she handed over three thousand dollars in cash to her attacker.
Following the incident, Hernandez Murcia apparently fled the scene, remaining at large for nearly two years. However, law enforcement never stopped pursuing the case. On October second, authorities finally caught up with him in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he was taken into custody.
That same day, Hernandez Murcia was extradited back to Miami-Dade County to face the music for his alleged crimes. He now faces a litany of serious charges including second-degree murder, armed robbery with a deadly weapon, domestic battery by strangulation, and aggravated battery with great bodily harm.
The court has denied bond, meaning Hernandez Murcia will remain behind bars as his case moves through the legal system. This case highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence and the lengths law enforcement will go to ensure justice is served.
