Welcome to Arrest Stories. Former NFL first-round draft pick Robert Nkemdiche was arrested in Georgia after police observed him leaving a Kroger grocery store with suspicious bulges in his clothing. Here's what may have happened.
A police officer conducting a routine business area check observed the thirty-one-year-old former Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle exiting a Kroger store in Georgia late last month. According to the police report, the officer noticed what appeared to be many large objects, square and rectangular shapes, consistent with concealed grocery items, inside Nkemdiche's sweatpants.
The six-foot-three, three-hundred-pound former Ole Miss star then walked from the Kroger to a nearby gas station while the officer called for backup. When officers made contact with Nkemdiche at the gas station, he no longer had the alleged stolen items in his possession.
However, a search of both the Kroger and gas station parking lots revealed frozen grocery items, candy bars, and almond milk scattered throughout the area. Store employees had reportedly witnessed Nkemdiche stuffing food items into his sweatpants before leaving the establishment.
Despite the alleged shoplifting incident, Kroger management chose not to press criminal charges against Nkemdiche. The store did want Nkemdiche criminally trespassed from the establishment, effectively banning him from returning.
When officers ran Nkemdiche's name through their system, they discovered multiple outstanding warrants in several states, including three active warrants in Georgia. County officials requested that officers place a hold on Nkemdiche due to these existing warrants.
The former number one high school football recruit, who earned millions during his NFL career, was subsequently taken to jail and booked on the outstanding warrants. Nkemdiche had been drafted twenty-ninth overall by the Cardinals in two thousand sixteen after a standout college career at the University of Mississippi.
