Welcome to Arrest Stories. Thirty-two-year-old Nick Reiner has been arrested on suspicion of murder after his father, acclaimed director Rob Reiner, and stepmother Michele Singer Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. Here's what may have happened.
On Saturday evening, Nick Reiner got into what witnesses described as a big fight with his father Rob Reiner at Conan O'Brien's Christmas party in Los Angeles, California. Party attendees reported that Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, and kept asking people if they were famous. Rob and Michele left the party following the argument with Nick.
The following day, Sunday afternoon, the couple's daughter Romy discovered Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner stabbed to death inside their home in the two hundred block of Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood. Officers responded to the Reiner home at approximately three forty p.m. Police found no sign of forced entry into the residence.
Nick Reiner was not at the home when his parents were found dead. Investigators believe Nick left at some point after the stabbings occurred. Law enforcement launched an intensive search for Nick, working throughout the night on the case.
Nick Reiner was located in South Los Angeles near USC, approximately fifteen miles from the scene of the stabbing. He was arrested around nine fifteen p.m. on Sunday and is currently being held without bail.
Defense attorney Alan Jackson is representing Nick Reiner, though Jackson declined to tell reporters how he became associated with the case or who would be paying his fees. Nick has not been medically cleared to be transported to the courthouse, and it remains unclear when his first court appearance will take place.
The homicide case is being turned over to prosecutors. Nick Reiner has a documented history of drug abuse problems and had previously been vocal about being homeless and addicted.
